Facilities will be built in Koryazhma, Nyandoma and Arkhangelsk, part of Russia's Arctic zone. This is reported by Alexander Stotsky, General Director of the Project Office for Arctic Development (POAD), with reference to the Russian Environmental Operator (REO). 

The waste sorting complex planned for construction near Arkhangelsk will be able to process up to 275,000 tons of solid municipal waste and provide the disposal of about 179,000 tons of SMW per year. The volume of investments for this facility will amount to RUB 2.8 bn, and the same amount is planned to be invested in two other facilities. According to the head of REO Denis Butsaev, the funding could be partly from a capital grant and partly from a bond issue by REO.

The launch of modern complexes will make it possible to solve one of the most acute environmental problems of Pomorie, associated with the accumulation of a significant amount of solid municipal waste and the overloading of existing facilities for SMW handling. This, in turn, will reduce the number of unauthorised landfills and decommission a number of exhausted landfill sites.

These measures are expected to enable the region to move from waste storage to a regulated system of waste collection, transport and recycling by 2024. The subject administration believes that more than 40% of waste will be recycled under this system. This will also have an economic impact: a new business niche will emerge in Pomorie with regard to SMW management.
