AZRF Resident to Create Major Transport Hub in Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Area
24.10.2024 // AZRF resident Tirvas LLC has completed a major project to construct two cable cars at the BigWood Ski Resort. Visitors will experience improved slope access in the 2024–2025 ski season.
'We've finished both construction projects, and the two cable cars are now operational for the 2024–2025 winter season. The polar day was advantageous—good night-time visibility helped us optimise the sequence of various project stages,' explained Alexander Sergienko, Director of the BigWood Ski Resort.
»In October 2024, the resort once again received prestigious industry awards. It won the SKI BUSINESS AWARDS 2024 in the category 'Best Ski Resort in the North-Western Federal District' and 'Best Ski Resort Restaurant in Russia'—the latter award went to the panoramic Plateau complex atop Mount Aikuaivenchorr. A restaurant complex project at an altitude of 820 metres has also been implemented under the AZRF scheme. Thus, it's clear that the resort's development with AZRF institution support is gaining recognition not only from guests but also within the industry.
According to the resort director, around RUB 2.2 bn were invested in new lifts and the panoramic Plateau restaurant complex on top of Mount Aikuaivenchorr. Tirvas LLC plans to significantly expand the tourist infrastructure, including building leisure facilities, accommodation and creating a network of hiking trails, among other developments. New cable car construction is also under consideration: a project for a new gondola-type cable car on the North Slope of Mount Aikuaivenchorr has already received support under the AZRF preferential regime. A positive assessment was also obtained from the Main State Expert Review of the Russian Federation.
BigWood Ski Resort is becoming a truly major tourist centre: the Aurora aqua complex and a hotel complex with multi-level parking will be built next to the ski resort. The aquatic centre will be able to accommodate up to 780 visitors at once, while the hotel will have 165 rooms or 450 beds. The commercial premises in the hotel will cover an area of up to 1,000 m2. The hotel will become the first full-fledged SKI-IN/SKI-OUT hotel in the Khibiny Mountains. Construction of these facilities is set to begin in 2025. These projects have received support from the Murmansk Region Government and are also being implemented as part of the In the North—Live! programme initiated by the region's Governor, Andrey Chibis.
According to the director of the BigWood Ski Resort, its popularity is steadily growing.
'Last season, we welcomed over 405,000 guests, which is more than 20% higher than the previous comparable period. The trend of increasing tourist flow continues, and we're confident that Arctic tourism will continue to develop,' emphasised Alexander Sergienko.
»He noted that the growing interest in Arctic tourism is directly linked to the construction of modern, high-quality infrastructure, including regional facilities. Among the ongoing projects, Alexander Sergienko highlighted the reconstruction of the Khibiny Airport terminal building, which is being carried out by PhosAgro.
Currently, there are 754 registered residents in the Arctic zone of the Russian Federation with a total declared investment of RUB 862 bn. The new companies are expected to create 26,316 new jobs. In the Murmansk Region, residents are offered a 75% subsidy on insurance premiums for the first 10 years, a 5% reduction in profit tax and zero profit tax for the first five years. Also, for the first three years, AZRF residents in the Murmansk Region can expect zero profit tax for the first 3 years of the project, a 1% simplified tax on income and a 5% simplified tax on income minus expenses for the same period.
