Internet will become almost a hundred times cheaper in the Yakut Arctic

By 2025, up to 98% of the population of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) will be provided with sustainable access to high-speed Internet and quality cellular communications thanks to the Synergy of the Arctic project, an agreement on the implementation of which was signed between the Ministry of Digital Development, Communications and Mass Media and the region.

17 October 2022

The document envisages the laying of a 392 Gbit/s fibre-optic communication line (FOCL) with a total length of 7,000 km. More than 24,000 households will be connected to the FOCL; its launch will make it possible to reduce Internet tariffs for the population of the Arctic part of the region by almost a hundredfold. Alexander Stotsky, General Director of the Project Office for Arctic Development, writes about this.

Yakutia's polar regions will be connected to fibre optic cable both from the mainland and through the waters of the North Sea Route—this will diversify capacity and provide redundancy for the Polar Express marine cable system, which will enhance the reliability and security of the regional communications system. According to the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) government, the construction will take place in three phases: the first will be from December 2022 to 2023, the second will be completed in 2024, and the third in 2025.

To date, more than 13,000 km of fibre-optic cables have been laid in the republic—thanks to fibre-optic cables, over 91% of Yakut residents have access to modern communication services. In the Arctic zone of Yakutia, the FOCL appeared in 2020, when the first polar region of Yakutia, Oleneksky, was connected to it. By the end of 2022, another district in the AZRF, Anabar, will be added to this list.
