The world's largest diesel icebreaker officially granted the passenger vessel status

FSUE Rosmorport's diesel electric-powered icebreaker Viktor Chernomyrdin was granted the Passenger ship characteristic in the class notation. As of now, the vessel can be used for Arctic cruises, including trips to the North Pole, in a period free of statutory activity.

Representatives of FSUE Rosmorport together with industry representatives and the crew of the Viktor Chernomyrdin icebreaker preliminary performed a set of works on modernisation. The news was reported by the press service of the FSUE Rosmorport.

The icebreaker modernisation project was carried out at the Energoeffektivnost LLC Design Bureau of Saint Petersburg. The main work was aimed at ensuring passenger safety in accordance with the rules of the Russian Maritime Register of Shipping and international conventions applicable to ships with the characteristic of a Passenger ship in the class symbol.

The vessel will be able to accommodate a total of about 90 tourists.

The Viktor Chernomyrdin icebreaker has a total power of 34.8 MW, Icebreaker8 ice class and is capable of icebreaking operations with ice thickness up to 3 m and speeds up to 17.8 knots in clear water. The vessel has an operating autonomy of up to 60 days. The multifunctional icebreaker is capable of providing icebreaker escorts, participating in research expeditions, receiving helicopters, transporting supplies and containers, equipped with laboratories for scientific research, a dynamic positioning system and comfortable living conditions for passengers.
