Digital Arctic IT Park to open in Arkhangelsk in September 2022

The Park will occupy the premises of the former headquarters of the 10th Army

6 November 2021

The Digital Arctic IT Park in Arkhangelsk will be launched in September 2022, Alexander Tsybulskiy, Governor of the Arkhangelsk Region, told TASS this Saturday.

'We have started a highly ambitious project to create an excellent digital science and education centre. This ultra-modern centre with an area of over 10,000 square metres will be part of the educational infrastructure of our Northern Arctic Federal University (NArFU). We expect to launch it in September next year,' Tsybulskiy said. This according to TASS.

The former headquarters of the 10th Army are currently undergoing renovation. The premises will be transformed into a modern, high-tech space with design work areas, workshops and laboratories for robotics, automation of monitoring and control of engineering systems, mechatronics and web design, a museum and a co-working area. 'Renovation work on the very beautiful but abandoned army headquarters is in full swing. We will outfit these Neoclassical Stalinist buildings with state-of-the-art technology,' the governor added.

The main tasks of the science park include the training of qualified personnel for the digital economy, networking with IT industry leaders, IT companies and consortiums and the digital transformation of the university's key processes. 'The IT Park will also provide opportunities for the implementation of startups in the region: among other projects, these will include educational programmes and the retraining of our specialists for the digital economy,' the news agency's interviewee explained. 'The main idea is to create an ecosystem, an infrastructure for young people that would allow them to realise themselves in the field of IT. It will be one of the largest IT competence centres in the Arctic Zone and our first of this kind in terms of its equipment and design.'

Tsybulskiy emphasised that so far there are not enough professionals specialising in the field of the digital economy and that the creation of Digital Arctic will contribute to the development of this branch of education. In addition, the region is preparing several legislative initiatives to ease the tax burden on IT businesses. 'We're preparing a whole list of regional legislative initiatives; we're doing everything in our power to significantly reduce the tax burden on the IT and tourism industries,' he added.
