Agreement on the development of a mining cluster in the Arctic part of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) signed

The Ministry for the Development of the Russian Far East and Arctic, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment of the Russian Federation, the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) and the Rosatom State Nuclear Energy Corporation signed an agreement on the development of a mining cluster in the Arctic part of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) on the margins of the Eastern Economic Forum.

7 September 2022

The agreement provides for the development of a comprehensive plan for the creation of the Kyuchus cluster of solid minerals deposits in the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia), using electricity from the capacity of a small-capacity nuclear power plant based on two RITM-200N reactor units, as well as in defining possible conditions for project implementation on the principles of public-private partnership.

'The development of minerals in Yakutia is fraught with great difficulties in terms of field accessibility, logistics and energy supply. Today's agreement is a new approach. We are forming clusters in which Rosatom creates energy centres, small-capacity nuclear power plants that ensure the launch of a whole cluster of fields. Such a solution makes it possible to tap into serious new reserves of mineral deposits and develop the economy and social sphere,' said Alexey Chekunkov, Minister of the Russian Federation for the Development of the Far East and the Arctic.

'The Ministry is extremely interested in the development of deposits that are part of the mineral resource centre in the Arctic part of Yakutia, both those already provided for use (for example, the large Kyuchus gold deposit, the Tirekhtyakh tin deposit) and those planned for provision (including the Deputatskoye tin deposit). The signed agreement will facilitate the earliest possible commissioning of deposits and will give a new impetus to prospecting and developing new deposits within this mineral resource centre,' said Dmitry Tetenkin, Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Ecology of Russia.

'The Republic will undertake the construction of social facilities in the villages of Ust-Kuyga and Deputatsky and Khayyr settlement, the renovation of the housing stock, including through the construction of new housing blocks, and the demolition of dilapidated and emergency housing. Together with the Ministry of Communications, we plan to implement a project to provide high-speed Internet access to the Arctic regions. This, of course, will also affect the territory of the Ust-Yansk mining and industrial cluster,' said the head of Yakutia, Aisen Nikolaev.
