Renovated Arkhangelsk Airport: more flights to and from the Arctic

Do visitors to the Russian Polar region experience turbulence during landing?

1 december 2023

The main airport of Arkhangelsk, Talagi, had long-needed repairs — both the runway required extensive reconstruction and the interior needed modernization. Today, after a large-scale seven-month renovation, the airport is fully operational. There are flights to Moscow, St. Petersburg, Naryan-Mar, Kaliningrad, Sochi, and Murmansk, with plans to significantly expand the list of destinations in 2024. Alexander Tsybulsky, the Governor of the Arkhangelsk Region, noted that there will be an increase in the number of routes across Russia — making it possible to reach the heart of the Russian Polar region from cities like Novosibirsk, Mineralnye Vody, Nizhny Novgorod and others. Plans are also underway to establish international traffic with Belarus.

The Arkhangelsk Airport runway was renovated as part of the Comprehensive Plan for the Modernisation and Expansion of the Mainline Infrastructure national project. As of now, it has undergone all necessary inspections and has been certified by Federal Air Transport Agency. The Flight Checks and Systems organization spent 40 hours solely on flight testing the facility, in addition to conducting further investigations of all aircraft landing and takeoff control systems. Engineers and inspectors tested radio ground equipment, light-signaling equipment and aviation telecommunications step-by-step to ensure the safety of the new runway. Given the harsh natural conditions in which dispatchers and pilots operate in the Arctic Circle, extensive checks of all airport systems are always essential. The main objective of these works is to bring the airfield infrastructure in line with modern safety standards and enhance its capacity. Alexander Dubinin, Acting Director of Arkhangelsk Airport, stated that the runway now meets all strength requirements, enabling operations with any type of aircraft. He proudly pointed out that in this regard, Talagi now stands on par with the airports of Moscow and St. Petersburg.

The renovation of the airport's internal spaces was funded through its own resources. 'The airport has completely updated its lighting, replaced check-in counters and dismantled old advertising structures. The design of the passenger terminal and the retail outlets within it have been updated, and the floor has undergone chemical cleaning,' quoted by the press service of the Government of the Arkhangelsk Region from the words of Sergey Rodnev, the Minister of Transport of the Arkhangelsk Region.

The airport's design was inspired by the works of Pinezh writer Fyodor Abramov, after whom the airport is named. His portrait greets guests on the building's facade, and an image of his home village, Vercola, adorns the waiting area. There have also been less noticeable but significant changes. During the renovation of the internal premises, equipment was replaced — including 10 thousand sq m of the main taxiway, 4 thousand sq m of station area pavement, air conditioners, inspection equipment, etc. Guests can now pass the time waiting for their flight in a renovated cafe with a panoramic view of the runway. Soon, all retail outlets inside the airport will be unified in style, and old advertisements have already been removed. The changes are accentuated by a new modern lighting system.

However, the extensive reconstruction does not conclude with the airport's reopening for aircraft. Next year, authorities plan to construct a patrol road, a sewage treatment facility and an emergency services building. The current plan is to complete the entire set of works by August, but passengers will not notice this.
